Before you take your basket and go shrooms hunting in your backyard, it’s important to get acquainted with the local fungi in your area. You need to do this so you can distinguish safe mushrooms from poisonous ones.
Mushrooms are in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Some strains have an enjoyable effect while some can have severe effects ranging from mild poisoning to death. Learning about the magic mushrooms you’ll be picking will save your life.
What mushrooms need to grow and thrive
By learning what mushrooms need to grow will help you find them in nature. Shrooms love moisture and therefore these will be in places where there’s abundant moisture like forest floors and canopies. You won’t find shrooms in places where there’s dry air and wind because these conditions can easily kill them.
Contrary to popular belief, mushrooms don’t need a dark environment to grow but an area with little light can help them retain moisture and thus they will be able to grow better.
Shrooms, no matter what species, need good soil. The best soil is fertile soil with chock full of nutrients like sugar, starch, fats, nitrogen, lignin, and protein. If these nutrients are present in tree barks, fallen trees, dung, fallen leaves or in compost, you will likely find shrooms growing on these surfaces too.
Shrooms also grow in places with the right humidity. Low humidity and the right temperature can help grow mushrooms even in your backyard.
Places where magic mushrooms are abundant
Psychedelic mushrooms are very common in North America on the West Coast. These are also present in the northeast part of the continent and near the Gulf of Mexico. Magic mushrooms are scattered all over Mexico and most of Central America. In South American countries like Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, and Columbia, different magic mushroom species can be easily found.
Another favorite shroom spot is Hawaii. High-quality magic mushrooms are sold in special dispensaries in the islands. Other countries where magic mushrooms abound are South Africa, Australia, India, Philippines and all the countries found in coastal Southeast Asia. There are yummy shrooms found growing in damp areas in Europe as well.
Foraging for magic mushrooms
The most practical way to find magic mushrooms is through foraging. The odds that you are going to find fresh shrooms are high especially when you are located in the countries and regions mentioned above.

The most popular psychedelic mushrooms
Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe subcubensis
These are two species which are found growing in tropical areas around the world. P. cubensis species are very common and are the most popular magic shrooms variety but the P. subcubensis are not so abundant and are found only in one particular area.
Psilocybe species have the same appearance with stubby stems and umbrella-like tops. The colors are light to a golden brown. The best example of Psilocybe strains is Golden Teacher.
This is the most widely available shrooms and you’ll find these in Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. Another term for P. semilanceata is Liberty Caps which is fitting because of the dark bell-like tops. But despite the meaty top, the stems are slim and wavy.
The Psilocybe cyanescens is well-known for its undulating top. This is why it’s also known as Wavy Caps. This strain is one of the most potent and can reach around 1.96% of active compounds by dry weight. This magic mushroom covers a wide area and can be seen growing on the West Coast of the US, along the south Bay Area, New Zealand, Central and Western parts of Europe and in some areas of Western Asia.
Panaeolus or Copelandia cyanescens
Also called Hawaiian mushrooms, these have a distinct appearance with long and slim stems as well as light brown and grey caps. The effects of C. cyanescens are very potent. The fact that this strain grows all over the world, makes this a wonderful starter strain to use. You can find C. cyanescens in south North America, South America, Central Africa, Western Europe, Southeast Asia and all over Oceana.
Azurescens are from the West Coast of the US in states like Oregon and Washington. This strain has one of the highest concentrations of psilocybin compared to other magic mushrooms with the highest up to 1.80%. The chemical called baeocystin is the most prominent in psilocybin and compared to P. cubensis, this strain can contain up to ten times more of baeocystin in dry weight. This has made this magic mushroom strain one of the most potent in existence.
It’s exciting to think that there’s a world of magic mushrooms waiting for you. But no matter what, take shrooms in moderation. Never indulge in shrooms unless you are familiar with its effects and if you want to buy your supply, do so from reputable dealers or suppliers.
